The Lord opened the door for Nehemiah to return home and rebuild the walls. The Lord blessed Nehemiah, giving the lowly cupbearer favor with the king. A race of slaves emerge from slavery to become a nation. A conquered people emerge from horrific suffering to reform their nation with the sanction of the conqueror to even rebuild their walls. And next to them Zaccur son of Imri built. Habakkuk was willing to wait for that vision.

Israel became a nation 69 years ago! There is nothing gentle about that! He confronted the people for robbing God by not bringing their tithes into the storehouse Mal. All that we know about him from contemporary sources is found in this book; and so the readers of this article are referred to the Book of Nehemiah for the best and fullest account of his words and deeds. Among primetime shows, seven out of 10 have sexual content. But let us stop charging interest! It was on account of this position of close intimacy with the king that Nehemiah was able to obtain his commission as governor of Judea and the letters and edicts which enabled him to restore the walls of Jerusalem. The walls of the city of Babylon, as recounted in the story of Daniel, were some 380 feet thick and over 100 feet high -- massive, tremendous walls. The man of sin will in fact make a military protective covenant with Israel which ushers in the rapture of the called out born again church and begins the ticking on Israel for the last week. Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish—and burnt ones at that? He doesn't rush out and get all the people excited to build the walls.

Care about your people and their troubles. Joiakim was the son of Jeshua the high priest. After this, the people celebrated the Feast of the Tabernacles, when Israel dwelt in booths made of tree boughs to remind them that they were simply strangers and pilgrims on earth. Prayer Our Father, we thank you for this look into your word, into the truth that affects our own lives. When Nehemiah returned, he found that permissiveness was rampant in the very areas the people had covenanted to stand against just a few years before! They celebrated the feast for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly. Now this is always how any return to the grace of God must begin. He poured out all his woes to Him. Other times something will start to slip through to come directly against you, and then God will move ahead of you to take it out. The cross must be at the beginning and the end of every life. But if we allow this old truth to go, we find that the wall crumbles and the enemies outside gain access to our soul. So, Nehemiah set to work to get the job done — enlisting anybody who would help. The city gates had been burned. That is where we must begin building for strength. Very soon after this the old corrupt state of things returned, showing the worthlessness to a large extent of the professions that had been made at the feast of the dedication of the walls of the city. Learning that the remnant of Jews in Judah were in distress and that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, he asked the king for permission to return and rebuild the city. To be complacent in the face of such evil is not to be like Jesus. This is why Jesus said His departure is to our advantage.

Nehemiah explained it all to the king, and obtained his permission to go up to Jerusalem and there to act as tirshatha , or governor of Judea. We live in a spiritually and morally permissive society. The Book of Nehemiah is usually read together with the Book of Ezra as one long book. Now these are the ways by which strength is maintained in our lives also. The book of Nehemiah falls into two divisions. It is our duty to reach out to them! The king, Artaxerxes Longimanus, seems to have been on terms of friendly familiarity with his attendant.
